Piranesi: the Complete Etchings
Giovanni Battista Piranesi made his name with etchings of ancient Rome, giving its ruins a drama that Grand Tourists carried home as souvenirs. This complete collection also includes his Carceri, the imagined prison series that has influenced creative minds from the Surrealists to Poe, Borges, and Kafka. Loosely drawn from stage sets, those scenes play with perspective, lighting, and scale to unsettling effect.
