Nightmares of Halloween Past
Halloween lets you be someone else for a night, and these vintage photos capture that freedom. Collected from flea markets, the images show unknown people in masks and homemade costumes, taken decades ago. What looks unsettling at first turns playful once you notice the smiles underneath. Artist Gary Baseman gathered them over years, and they sparked his own costumes, paintings, and performances. A strange, warm tribute to an American tradition.
