Description

This comprehensive monograph introduces acclaimed painter Amy Sherald, renowned for her simplified realist portraiture featuring African American subjects set against vibrant monochrome backdrops or everyday scenes.

Recognized globally after being selected by former First Lady Michelle Obama for her official portrait in 2018, Sherald made history as the first African American woman to receive this prestigious commission.

The monograph, released in conjunction with her solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth London in 2022, includes reproductions of Sherald's recent works, illustrations of earlier paintings, and an intimate look into her artistic process through in-studio photographs.

Commissioned texts offer an art historical analysis by Jenni Sorkin, a reflection on the politics and aesthetics of Sherald's portraiture by cultural scholar Kevin Quashie, and a conversation between Sherald and renowned author Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Born in 1973 in Georgia, Amy Sherald earned her MFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004, showcasing her works in numerous group and solo exhibitions globally. She currently resides in Baltimore and New Jersey.
